Now is the perfect moment to refresh these spaces with décor that feels lighter, brighter, and beautifully effortless. One trend leading the way this season is coloured glass décor. Glass pieces, like vases, bowls and candle holders catch natural light, add gentle movement, and bring a fresh, modern elegance to outdoor living.
Rule of Odds
A beautiful outdoor glass display begins with varying heights and shapes. On a patio table or outdoor server, pair tall cylinder vases with shorter, rounded bowls or wide flat statement pieces. This creates a dynamic flow that feels relaxed rather than overly styled. Odd numbers work especially well outdoors in clusters of three or five pieces to get a more organic feel, echoing the natural asymmetry of garden spaces.
Texture & Tones
Feel free to mix textures and tones. Clear glass layered with ribbed, mottled, or softly tinted pieces adds depth, especially when sunlight filters through them during our South African sunsets.
For alfresco dining, line up a staggered row of small bud vases down the centre of your patio table. Keep the florals simple, for example, use a single stem, a sprig of greenery, or an interesting, shaped branch. On coffee tables or side tables, anchor the space with one large sculptural glass piece that reflects the surrounding greenery without feeling heavy.
Catching the Light
Embrace both empty and filled glass pieces. Leave some pieces bare to showcase their transparency or colour, while others can hold smooth stones, seashells, LED fairy lights or floating candles for evening ambience, or a single leafy stem clipped straight from the garden. To further enhance the glow, place glass décor near natural light sources — along a windowsill that opens onto the patio, on a sunlit outdoor shelf, or even on a mirrored tray to amplify reflections.
